Hib
The Hib vaccine prevents infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b bacteria, which can lead to life-threatening conditions like meningitis, pneumonia, and epiglottitis. These illnesses often affect infants and young children, making early protection vital. The vaccine works by teaching the immune system to recognize and fight the bacteria. It is often given as part of combination vaccines, reducing the number of injections. Completing the full schedule ensures long-term protection.
IPV
The Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) protects against poliomyelitis, a viral infection that can cause paralysis. IPV uses killed virus, so it is very safe and cannot cause polio. It builds strong systemic immunity and is often given alongside the oral polio vaccine for better protection. The vaccine is vital to India's polio-free status and remains part of the routine schedule. It requires multiple doses and boosters for full protection. DTP/DTwP/DTap
DTaP vaccine protects children against three serious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough). Diphtheria affects the throat, tetanus causes muscle stiffness, and pertussis leads to severe coughing spells. The acellular DTaP is safer and has fewer side effects compared to the older DTwP. It is widely used in private settings, while DTwP is used in UIP. Booster doses are important to maintain immunity over time. Hep B
The Hepatitis B vaccine prevents infection caused by the hepatitis B virus, which attacks the liver. Chronic infection can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, and early death. Giving the first dose within 24 hours of birth provides early protection. Subsequent doses at 6, 10, and 14 weeks help ensure long-term immunity.
